Bernie:
Thank you for comming to Ft Knox. I realized that I forgot to tell you what the pin I gave you means. It means many things to many people. ==1) The “AA” is for All Americans, as the soldiers from Bragg are known since World War 1. The red background means bravery paid in blood. 2) To a soldier who deployed with me in 2008 means: The pride of serving for this country, but also means the feeling of loss for the 8 soldiers in my unit who did not returned alive. 3) To me, the meaning is much deeper. I saw some of their family photos. I always remember a Christmas photo of a soldier, with the wife and 2 children. She is smilling and the 3 years old is in his lap. After he was killed, I realized that they not only killed a soldier, but also killed the whole family. No more Christmas photos, no more Santa hats, no more baseball games….
So Bernie, that is my meaning of a pin that most soldiers carry with pride…
